Flashcard Factory

Flash Card Factory

Fun new team game that builds soft skills and vocabulary

Pear Deck has come up with a way to take the humdrum out of studying  vocabulary.  Students are divided into two teams, the Day Shift and the Night Shift.  Those teams are then further divided into pairs. (The software does all this for you, but you can make quick changes if you don’t like the teams or pairs.)  Pairs then work together to make their best flashcard, including a drawing and a written example.   Communication is encouraged as students determine the best way to illustrate their term.

Once they are satisfied with their work, their flashcard is sent down the assembly line to wait for evaluation.   Then, the whole group is tasked with deciding if a flashcard is up to the quality standards of the factory, or not.  Cards appear anonymously on the  Smartboard.  More analytical discussion is invited as the whole group decides the fate of each card.  Finally, a winner is announced in the battle of Day Shift vs Night Shift. Then… (yes, there’s more!)  if you love Quizlet Live, you can go right on with your new flashcards and play a round of that game, as well.  It’s all linked together.
How to Play
First, the teacher creates a vocabulary list at PearDeck.com.  Type in your words and their definitions.  Pear Deck will help with the definition by making suggestions,  so creating a list does not take long.  Then you’re ready to play.  Start presenting.  Students join with a code, just like you do with a slide deck.
Once you launch the game, the teacher is free to move around the room and consult with teams and pairs.  The assembly line appears on the board where everyone can see the cards being created.  Once enough cards have been created, the teacher ends the team part of the game and gathers everyone together at the board to do quality control.  After the game you can choose to send your class via their Chromebooks directly to Quizlet to play a round of Quizlet Live.  It’s a whole lot of fun with vocabulary words!
